Nestling demurely within an exceptional one-off neo-Gothic Islington square, built between 1830 and 1840, this tall and narrow five storey listed terrace house appealed immediately to its new owners for the richness of its original architectural detailing, the impeccable proportions of its rooms and the exceptional East/West double aspect views, onto the square at the front and onto a charming set of traditional urban gardens at the back.
Â
The challenge for the architects consisted in creating a practical, comfortable and appropriate home for a young family of five while preserving and enhancing the beauty of the original building. This was achieved by working closely with Historic England, who eventually granted BWA permission to raise the rear roof eaves in order to create two light and airy third floor bedrooms in the original loft space.
